Kannimaram

Kannimaram is an ancient teak tree in Nilambur that rises 48 meters tall with a massive trunk measuring roughly 6.5 meters around. It stands surrounded by other forest growth within a protected woodland area, part of a larger reserve in the region.

This tree began its growth roughly 400 years ago and has stood through centuries of change in the Western Ghats forest landscape. Over time it has become a witness to Kerala's forestry history and the region's long relationship with its woodlands.

The name comes from local words meaning 'virgin tree', reflecting how people in the region connect this giant to their traditions and beliefs. Walking around its massive trunk, visitors sense how this tree holds meaning beyond its physical size in the community's memory.

The site requires advance booking and official permission from authorities since it is located within a protected forest reserve. Guided tours are the best way to reach the tree and learn about its surroundings while following conservation rules.

The tree grows within a UNESCO World Heritage area recognized for exceptional biodiversity found nowhere else. This forest reserve protects species and ecosystems that exist only in this particular region of the Western Ghats.
