Aliyar Reservoir, Irrigation reservoir in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, India
Aliyar Reservoir is a reservoir in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, India, situated at the foot of the Valparai hills. The water body stretches across several kilometers between forested slopes and gathers water from the Western Ghats mountains.
Construction of the associated dam started in 1959 and was completed ten years later. The official opening took place in 1962 with the then Indian Prime Minister attending the ceremony.
The reservoir takes its name from the Aliyar River that flows through the Anaimalai valley. Local residents visit the shores during festivals to participate in religious ceremonies related to water and nature.
Access is via a road that leads from Pollachi up into the mountains. The terrain is relatively flat along the shore, making movement on foot or by vehicle easier.
The water body hosts several native fish species that researchers study in laboratories along the shore. These facilities conduct studies on freshwater ecology and fish breeding.
