Amaravathi Reservoir, lake in India
Amaravathi Reservoir is a large body of water that stretches across the landscape, surrounded by rolling hills of the Western Ghats and Palani Hills. The water and surrounding greenery offer an open and calm environment to explore and walk along.
The dam was built in the late 1950s across the Amaravathi River, primarily to store water for nearby villages and control flooding during heavy rains. This structure transformed agricultural practices in the region by enabling year-round water supply for farming.
The reservoir serves as more than just a place to visit for local communities. It is central to daily life, with farmers depending on it to irrigate their fields and supply water to households throughout the region.
The best time to visit is during the cooler months after the monsoon season, from September to March, when the weather is pleasant. You can reach the area easily by car or taxi from nearby towns such as Marayoor, Pollachi, or Coimbatore.
The reservoir is home to one of the largest crocodile populations in the country, known as India's largest crocodile nursery. Around 100 crocodiles, including Persian and large South Indian species, live here under protection and care of forest officials.
