Solaiyar Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Valparai, Tamil Nadu
Solaiyar Dam stretches 430 meters across the Chalakkudi River and rises 66 meters high, creating a water reservoir of 8.7 square kilometers. The structure consists of a massive concrete wall that collects water from the western mountain ranges and channels it through pipelines to the turbines below.
Construction of this facility took place between 1964 and 1965 under engineer K. Palanisamy and was part of a larger plan to develop hydroelectric power in Tamil Nadu. Operation began in 1971 and marked an important moment in regional energy history.
Local communities view this facility as a key part of their regional power supply, while the impounded water also supports irrigation for surrounding plantations. Fishermen occasionally use the calmer shores of the reservoir when access permits.
Visitors need special authorization from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited to enter the site. The nearest town of Valparai sits in the hills and offers accommodation and transport connections.
The power station sits within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, so visitors may occasionally spot wild elephants and other animals in the surrounding forests during the approach. The elevation creates a cooler climate that contrasts sharply with the hot plains to the east.
