Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary

The nature reserve spans 25 square kilometers of subtropical forests in the Barail Range, containing numerous plant species and extensive wildlife populations.

Local villagers established this sanctuary in 1998 following an incident where 300 Blyth's tragopans were killed during a single hunting competition.

The Angami tribe transformed their traditional hunting practices into conservation efforts, creating a community-managed forest protection system.

Visitors can access the sanctuary through Kohima, located 18 kilometers away, where accommodations and guided tours are available throughout the year.

The sanctuary contains three distinct forest types, making it an Important Bird Area with 21 restricted-range bird species, including the rare Blyth's tragopan.
