Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected area near Lonar Lake, Maharashtra, India
The Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary spans 365 hectares around a saltwater lake formed by a meteorite impact, housing 160 bird species and 12 mammal species.
The sanctuary protects an ancient crater lake created approximately 50,000 years ago when a meteorite struck the Deccan Plateau basaltic rock formation.
The sanctuary borders 1250 ancient temples, reflecting the historical and religious importance of the region within Maharashtra's heritage.
Visitors can access the sanctuary from sunrise to sunset through Jalna Railway Station, located 84 kilometers away with regular bus connections.
The lake within the sanctuary experienced a transformation to pink in July 2020 due to the presence of Haloarchaea bacteria in its saline waters.
