Bhadbhut barrage, Water barrage in Bhadbhut, India
Bhadbhut barrage is a water structure on the Narmada River in Gujarat, stretching about 1.7 kilometers with roughly 90 gates to manage water flow. The structure sits in a strategic location to keep saltwater from the Arabian Sea out while providing irrigation water for the surrounding farmland.
Construction of the barrage began in August 2020 with an expected completion in 2025. The project was designed to improve water management in the region and better protect the agricultural areas from coastal water intrusion.
Farmers in the region use water from the barrage to irrigate their fields, relying on methods passed down through generations. The structure allows them to plan their harvests more reliably and become less dependent on dry seasons.
Visitors can view the structure from the nearby Dahej port or from the modern bridge that crosses it. The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels are lower and the structure is more visible.
A six-lane roadway connects the industrial zones of Dahej and Hazira by crossing the barrage itself. This passage significantly shortens travel time between these two economic centers.
