Falzarego Pass, Mountain pass in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
Falzarego Pass is a mountain pass in the Dolomites that connects the Cordevole Valley with Cortina d'Ampezzo. The road is known for its numerous hairpin turns and offers outstanding views of the surrounding peaks when you drive across it.
The pass gained major military importance during World War I when Italian and Austrian troops built extensive fortifications there. This heritage remains visible today in the remains scattered along the mountain route.
The name comes from the Ladin word 'fouze' meaning scythe, showing the linguistic variety of this alpine region between Italian and German-speaking areas. This location brings together different local traditions.
The road over the pass is often closed during winter months and should be driven carefully in snowy conditions. Allow plenty of time for the numerous curves, and be aware that conditions can change quickly up here.
A cable car runs from here up to Mount Lagazuoi, where you can walk through preserved tunnel systems from World War I. These underground passages show how soldiers lived and fought in this harsh high-altitude environment.
