Pila, human settlement in Aosta Valley
Pila is a ski area in Gressan positioned at about 1,790 meters (5,880 feet) in elevation, featuring over 70 kilometers of slopes with runs for all skill levels. The resort sits in a natural bowl-shaped formation and is equipped with more than 200 snow cannons, four black runs for advanced skiers, twenty-one red runs for intermediate skiers, and four blue runs for beginners.
The area was originally used as summer pasture by herders and their animals, but transformed into a ski resort with the growth of winter tourism. The cable car connection from Aosta, completed in the 20th century, enabled the area's development as a modern winter sports destination.
Pila's name comes from its position as a high plateau, and today it functions as a hub for winter sports enthusiasts from across the region. The local community remains small and rooted to mountain life, with visitors often encountering friendly residents who share stories about seasonal traditions and outdoor living.
The easiest way to reach Pila is by cable car from Aosta, which takes about 18 minutes and reaches 1,800 meters without needing a car. The slopes are well-maintained and there are separate beginner areas like Baby Gorraz and Grimod, while more challenging zones between Chamolé and Platta di Grevon suit experienced skiers.
Pila is notable for its past connection to a mountain railway that no longer operates, though plans to transform it into a scenic tourist route remain part of local history. During heavy snow years, the area can receive over 2 meters of snow, turning it into an extreme winter sports destination.
