Campo santo, Monumental cemetery in Pisa, Italy
The Campo Santo features a rectangular structure with 43 blind arches along its outer wall and two ornate doorways decorated with Gothic elements.
Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi brought sacred soil from Golgotha to Pisa during the Third Crusade in the 12th century for the cemetery's foundation.
The cemetery walls contain extensive frescoes covering 2,600 square meters, depicting biblical themes and moral narratives by various Italian Renaissance artists.
The cemetery provides wheelchair access and stands near the Cathedral Square, making it convenient to visit along with other major Pisa landmarks.
The Chapel Aulla displays the original incense lamp that Galileo Galilei used for his groundbreaking pendular calculations and observations.
