Campo santo, Monumental cemetery in Pisa, Italy
Campo Santo is a cemetery in Pisa with a rectangular structure featuring 43 blind arches along its outer wall and two ornate doorways in Gothic style. Inside are gravestones, sarcophagi, and wall paintings that fill the space with artistic works.
In the 12th century, Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi brought sacred soil from Golgotha to Pisa to establish the cemetery. This connection to the Holy Land made it an important burial place for wealthy and influential people in the city.
The walls display frescoes with biblical scenes and moral stories painted by various Italian Renaissance artists. Visitors can see these works today and notice the religious messages they were meant to convey.
The cemetery is wheelchair accessible and located next to Cathedral Square, making it easy to visit along with other major Pisa landmarks. You can spend several hours inside studying the artworks on the walls.
The Chapel Aulla houses the original incense lamp that Galileo Galilei used for his groundbreaking observations of pendulum motion. This personal object from a great scientist provides a direct link to an important moment in the history of natural science.
