Museo delle Sinopie del Camposanto monumentale

The Sinopie Museum displays fresco preparatory drawings inside a restored 13th-century building designed by Giovanni di Simone near the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The museum opened in 1979 following the rescue of medieval frescoes damaged during World War II bombings of the Camposanto Monumentale in 1944.

The collection includes preliminary sketches by Italian masters Buffalmacco, Francesco Traini, Pietro di Puccio, and Benozzo Gozzoli, revealing their artistic techniques from the 14th century.

The museum provides wheelchair access throughout its exhibition spaces and receives over 150,000 visitors annually under the management of Opera della Primaziale Pisana.

The preparatory drawings emerged during the restoration process when conservators removed damaged frescoes from walls, revealing hidden red-pigmented sketches underneath.
