Torre del Leone

The Torre del Leone forms an integral section of the defensive walls of Pisa, standing at the same elevation as the surrounding fortifications.

During the Florentine occupation of 1406, the tower underwent partial demolition along with other towers, as invading forces eliminated structures representing municipal power.

The tower received its name from an Etruscan lion statue that was previously positioned within a designated niche adjacent to the structure.

Visitors can observe the tower from multiple vantage points near Piazza del Duomo, where it connects to a former gate bearing the same designation.

The structure maintains its original position as part of the medieval defensive network, providing insights into the military architecture of medieval Pisa.
