Bivacco Giuseppe Lampugnani, Mountain hut in Aosta Valley, Italy.
Bivacco Giuseppe Lampugnani is a small mountain hut at 3,852 meters (12,638 feet) in the Mont Blanc massif that accommodates about six climbers. The shelter serves as a crucial staging point for mountaineers working at this high altitude.
The original building was constructed in 1939 and adapted over decades until 2010, when a new structure replaced it due to platform damage. The replacement addressed deteriorating structural conditions of the older construction.
The Alpine Academic Club of Italy maintains this shelter, named after Giuseppe Lampugnani, supporting the long tradition of mountaineering in the region.
The hut is reachable after a multi-hour walk starting from lower shelters, crossing grassland and snowfields. Visitors should start early and bring warm clothing, as weather conditions at this altitude change quickly.
The approach to the hut crosses a particularly steep glacier section that demands experience and proper equipment. Only experienced climbers should attempt this route, as crevasses and snowbridges present constant hazards.
