Grand Flambeau, Mountain peak at France-Italy border, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
Grand Flambeau is a 3566 meter peak situated in the Mont Blanc massif on the France-Italy border. The summit offers views of surrounding peaks including Aiguilles Marbrées, Dent du Géant, and Mont Blanc itself.
The peak was first climbed on 20 July 1876 by Henri Cordier, Jacob Anderegg, and Kaspar Maurer. This early ascent marked an important moment in the alpine mountaineering history of the region.
The mountain serves as a training ground for mountaineers developing their skills before undertaking more demanding ascents in other global ranges.
The southeast ridge from Col du Saussure provides the most direct approach to the summit and requires technical climbing skills. Mountaineers should bring appropriate gear and have experience navigating steep alpine terrain.
The summit marks the watershed line dividing the Adriatic Sea from the Mediterranean Sea, highlighting its geographic role in the Alps. This hydrological importance makes the location a key reference point for understanding the mountain range's structure.
