Dôme de Rochefort

Dôme de Rochefort, Alpine summit in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and Courmayeur, France and Italy.

Dôme de Rochefort is an alpine summit located at 4,015 meters on the border between France and Italy within the Mont Blanc massif. The mountain features steep slopes, glaciated passages, and rocky ridges that demand climbing experience.

The summit was first climbed in 1881 by James Eccles alongside guides Alphonse and Michel Payot. Since then, it has become an established goal for mountaineers exploring the Mont Blanc massif.

The summit brings together mountaineers from France and Italy who share this peak as a symbol of their joint alpine heritage. Climbers from both countries use it as a meeting place during their expeditions.

The mountain is accessible via Rifugio Torino, reachable by cable car from the Italian side, which serves as a base for attempts on the peak. Plan for multiple days as weather at this elevation changes rapidly, and mountaineering experience is necessary.

The southern face descends nearly 1,000 meters as a sheer rocky spur to the Plampincieux glacier, creating a dramatic view from both sides of the border. This rugged southern aspect is less travelled than northern routes and reveals a different character of the mountain.
