Punta Margherita, Mountain summit in Graian Alps, France-Italy border.
Punta Margherita is a 4,066 meter (13,345 foot) summit in the Grandes Jorasses range of the Graian Alps. It forms the natural boundary between Courmayeur in Italy and Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France.
The peak received its name in honor of Queen Margherita of Italy during the 19th century period when alpinists and explorers were systematically mapping the region. This naming followed the broader wave of Alpine exploration and territorial documentation of the era.
The peak draws climbers from both nations who practice different climbing techniques and approaches. Here, French and Italian mountain traditions meet in the shared experience of the climb.
Advanced climbing skills and proper technical equipment are necessary for an ascent, particularly during winter from December through March when conditions become more severe. Thorough preparation and honest assessment of your own abilities are essential before attempting the route.
The summit serves as a critical watershed divide where precipitation splits into two different drainage systems. Water either flows toward the Adriatic Sea or toward the Mediterranean, showing the site's geological importance.
