Glacier de Planpincieux, Alpine glacier in Courmayeur, Italy.
Glacier de Planpincieux is a mountain glacier on the southern face of the Grandes Jorasses, part of the Mont Blanc massif, above Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley. It sits on a steep rock wall and is visible from several points in the valley below.
The glacier was noted by early alpinists exploring the southern walls of the Grandes Jorasses in the 19th century. In recent decades its retreat has accelerated, drawing growing attention from researchers across the Alps.
The glacier has become closely tied to local awareness of alpine hazards, with road closures and alerts now a familiar part of life in Courmayeur. Residents and visitors alike have grown used to watching for updates during warmer months when the ice is most unstable.
Before visiting, check current access conditions, as the road into Val Ferret can be closed when the risk of ice fall is high. Early morning tends to offer clearer views from the valley floor.
The glacier is split into two separate ice bodies that move at different speeds and can break away independently of each other. This makes its behavior particularly hard to predict and is one reason why monitoring here runs continuously day and night.
