Lago del Barbellino, lake in Italy
Lago del Barbellino is a reservoir held by a dam located in the upper Seriana Valley within the Orobie mountain range. The water displays a deep blue color, surrounded by steep forested slopes and rocky walls that rise from the shore.
The reservoir was created in the 1930s when a dam was built to regulate water from multiple valleys, providing power for the region's growing textile industry. This construction fundamentally changed the appearance of this mountain landscape.
The reservoir attracts walkers and mountain lovers who gather here to connect with the high alpine environment. The nearby Curò Refuge, built in 1886, serves as a meeting point that shows how this place has welcomed generations of visitors seeking the mountains.
The hike to the lake starts from Valbondione village where parking is available, though it fills early during peak season. The trail climbs through forest in gentle switchbacks to reach the lake level, with a total walking time of about three to three and a half hours and an elevation gain exceeding 1000 meters.
Once yearly the dam opens its gates to create a spectacular waterfall called Cascate del Serio, a sight visible only at this location during that time. This natural display draws visitors who come specifically to witness this rare occurrence.
