Rifugio Carducci, Mountain hut in Auronzo di Cadore, Italy.
Rifugio Carducci sits at 2,297 meters (7,535 feet) beneath Forcella Giralba pass and looks out toward Croda dei Toni and Monte Giralba di Sopra peaks. The shelter holds 54 beds split among three dormitories and serves regional dishes including local variations of canederli dumplings.
In 1908, the Italian Alpine Club converted a shepherd shelter into this mountain refuge by building two ground floor rooms and adding six beds upstairs. Over time, the shelter grew from that modest beginning into the larger facility it is today.
The refuge takes its name from Italian poet Giosuè Carducci, connecting this mountain place to his literary work about this Alpine region. Visitors can feel how literature and mountain tradition intertwine at this location.
The refuge opens from June through September and serves as a good base for hiking in this mountain region with marked trails nearby. Since this location is not accessible by vehicle, visitors should come prepared to walk and bring suitable hiking gear.
Water for the refuge comes from Lago Nero, a small spring-fed lake at the base of Croda dei Toni. This detail shows how isolated mountain shelters rely entirely on natural water sources to function.
