Rifugio Croda da Lago, Mountain hut at 2046 meters in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
Rifugio Croda da Lago is a mountain hut at 2,046 meters elevation located in the Cortina d'Ampezzo area of the Dolomites. It sits at the base of Croda da Lago mountain next to Lake Federa, where the surrounding peaks mirror themselves in the water below.
The hut was built in 1901 by mountain guide Giovanni Barbaria and initially belonged to the Austro-German Alpine Club. After World War I, ownership changed and it was later renamed to honor Partisan commander Gianni Palmieri.
The refuge bears the name of Gianni Palmieri, a Partisan commander from World War II who was honored for his military service. Visitors can sense this history through the way the refuge is run and maintained.
The hut offers 51 beds in dormitory-style rooms and requires guests to bring their own sleeping bags and towels. The high altitude location means it is important to arrive well-prepared and be ready for changing mountain weather.
The Alvera family prepares homemade specialties like ricotta cake and traditional strudel during their time running the hut. These handmade recipes are part of what guests experience when staying at the refuge.
