Rifugio Nuvolau, Mountain refuge in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
Rifugio Nuvolau is a stone building located at 2574 meters elevation in the Dolomites, offering accommodation and meals to mountaineers and hikers. The shelter has simple rooms and a dining space where guests gather for breakfast and dinner.
Colonel Richard von Meerheimb funded the construction of this shelter in 1883. It was the first mountain refuge built in the entire Dolomites region.
The refuge is family-run and serves regional dishes prepared according to local recipes. Guests sit together at long tables, reflecting the traditional style of alpine hospitality.
The refuge can be reached via several hiking trails, with the shortest route taking about an hour and a half from Rifugio Cinque Torri through marked terrain. It is advisable to start early in the day and bring proper footwear and weather-resistant clothing.
Water is transported to the shelter through a cable system from the nearby Rifugio Cinque Torri, a technical solution developed specifically for operating at this elevation. This system shows the practical challenges faced by mountain refuges in serving guests day to day.
