Rifugio Regina Elena, Mountain hut in Valdieri, Italy
Rifugio Regina Elena is a mountain hut located at 1850 meters (6,070 feet) in the Maritime Alps, serving as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding terrain. The shelter sits in the heart of this alpine landscape with views across rocky peaks and mountain passes.
The original structure built in 1966 was destroyed by avalanches in 1971, prompting the construction of a new stone building that opened in September 1981. This rebuild resulted in a stronger structure designed to withstand the harsh mountain environment.
The refuge bears the name of Elena of Montenegro, who served as Queen of Italy from 1900 to 1946, reflecting the region's connection to Italian monarchy.
The hut offers limited sleeping space in shared dormitory rooms and is managed by volunteer staff during the mountain season. It is best to check ahead to confirm the current operating period aligns with your hiking plans.
From this location visitors can access climbing routes to Monte Argentera and Cima di Mercantour, or hike to the nearby Rifugio Genova-Figari via Brocan Pass. This position links several significant peaks in a concentrated mountain area.
