Punte Alberete, Protected area near Ravenna, Italy
Punte Alberete is a protected wetland reserve with freshwater areas, reed beds, and marshy terrain that shelter many aquatic and land-dwelling creatures. The landscape consists of open water, dense reed stands, and forested sections that form a patchwork of different habitats.
The site formed from stagnant waters of the Lamone River, which failed to reach the sea until 1300. It remains a remnant of the ancient Po Valley marshes that shaped the landscape for thousands of years.
The area functions as a place where people come to observe and understand water birds that inhabit the wetlands in large numbers. Visitors can directly experience how such natural spaces matter for the survival of bird populations.
The reserve is accessible via marked walking trails that remain open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year. Early morning visits offer the best conditions for observing bird activity when creatures are most active.
The wetland hosts one of Italy's most significant egret colonies with roughly 700 to 1,000 breeding pairs nesting among white poplars, oaks, and white willows. This remarkable concentration of birds makes the reserve globally noteworthy for the species.
