Sant'Agostino, Gothic church in Città Alta, Italy
Sant'Agostino is a Gothic church in the upper city featuring seven chapels on each side and restored medieval frescoes adorning its interior walls. The structure displays characteristic Gothic elements and retains remnants of its medieval decorative program throughout its interior spaces.
Construction began in 1290 on the site of an earlier church and was consecrated in 1347 by Bishop Bernardo Bernardi. The project reflects the religious importance the community of Bergamo held during this period of medieval expansion.
The building transitioned from a place of worship to an educational hub in 2015, now serving as the main auditorium of the University of Bergamo. People gather here today for lectures and events rather than religious ceremonies, giving the space a new purpose while honoring its past.
The building is located in the Città Alta and can be reached on foot from the city center, though the climb is steep. Access is available on event days, so visitors should check opening times before planning a visit.
During Napoleon's rule in 1797, the church was converted into barracks, leading to the loss of many original furnishings and decorative elements. Today the sparse interior reflects this dramatic transformation and the many layers of its past.
