Tsuchiura

Located on the western shore of Lake Kasumigaura, Tsuchiura extends across 122 square kilometers with a population of 142,000 residents in northeastern Japan.

The city developed from a strategic military outpost during the Muromachi Period, centered around Tsuchiura Castle, which controlled regional trade routes between Edo and Mito.

Four restored Edo Period storehouses, including Mise-gura and Sode-gura, function as cultural centers displaying traditional architecture and local artifacts.

The JR East Joban Line connects Tsuchiura to Tokyo through regular train services, with the main station located in the central business district.

The National Fireworks Contest, established in 1925, brings together pyrotechnic experts from across Japan to compete over Lake Kasumigaura each autumn.
