Tsukuba, Research metropolis in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
The city extends across 283 square kilometers of land northeast of Tokyo, incorporating scientific research institutes, universities, and Mount Tsukuba in its territory.
The formation of Tsukuba city occurred in 1987 through the combination of multiple towns, following extensive development initiatives that started in the 1960s.
The city maintains a multinational research community with 3,000 international students and researchers from 90 countries working at 46 national research facilities.
The Tsukuba Express train line connects residents to central Tokyo, while the city offers more than 100 parks with sports facilities and recreational areas.
Nearly half of Japan's public research and development budget flows into Tsukuba's scientific institutions, supporting discoveries in superconducting materials and earthquake safety.
