Muroran

The city extends along Volcano Bay with a natural harbor bordered by mountains and contains numerous steel mills, cement factories, and oil refineries.

The area originated as a trading post between the Ainu people and the Matsumae clan before developing into a major industrial center in the late 19th century.

The name Muroran comes from the Ainu language term 'Mo Ruerani', referencing a small slope near the former Senkai Temple in Sakimori district.

Five JR Hokkaido train stations connect the city to major destinations like Hakodate and Sapporo, serving its population of 76,385 residents.

The Japan Steel Works facility in Muroran remains the sole manufacturer worldwide capable of producing nuclear reactor vessels as single-piece castings.
