Gamagori, Coastal resort city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan

Gamagori is a coastal city in Aichi Prefecture on the main island of Honshu, stretching along the shores of Mikawa Bay. Mountains reach down to the water while orange groves cover the slopes and small beaches lie between rocky sections.

During the Heian period the area consisted of several feudal estates before coming under direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period. The modern city formed in 1954 through the merger of several smaller municipalities after World War II.

The name combines characters meaning "toad," "frog," and "village," reflecting the area's wetland origins before coastal development. Local residents often visit the waterfront parks along Mikawa Bay to watch fishing boats return in the early afternoon.

The JR Tokaido Line connects the city to Nagoya Station in about 42 minutes, making day trips possible. The beaches and waterfront paths work best for visits between spring and autumn when weather is mild.

Takeshima, a small island offshore, is reachable by a 387-meter (1270-foot) pedestrian bridge and hosts 230 plant species. The Yaotomi Shrine stands on the highest point of the island and offers a circular view of the bay.
