Musashi-Sakai Station, Railway interchange station in Musashino, Japan
Musashi-Sakai Station is a railway interchange in Musashino that combines elevated platforms serving two different rail operators under one roof. The two JR East platforms sit parallel to each other while the Seibu platform runs perpendicular, creating a T-shaped layout at track level.
The station began operations in 1889 under the name Sakai and was renamed in 1919 to avoid confusion with other stations across Japan. The platforms were later elevated as part of a broader modernization effort along the Chūō Line corridor.
The International Christian University and National Astronomical Observatory headquarters bring academic influence to the station's surrounding neighborhood.
The station sits on the northern edge of Musashino and offers direct connections to central Tokyo and the western suburbs. The trip to Shinjuku takes roughly half an hour, while the Seibu line heads south toward neighboring districts.
The area around the station retains pockets of working farmland where local growers cultivate seasonal produce alongside residential blocks. These farms often supply nearby markets and maintain a rural character within the greater Tokyo region.
