Tokyo Keizai University, Private university in Kokubunji, Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo Keizai University is a private institution in Kokubunji, in western Tokyo, specializing in economics, business administration, contemporary law, and communication studies. The buildings spread across several plots in a quieter suburban environment, surrounded by residential neighborhoods and local shops near the train station.
The university was founded in 1900 as a commercial school named Okura Shogyo Gakko by entrepreneur Okura Kihachiro. It gained its present status in 1949, when postwar education reforms paved the way for private universities in Japan.
The campus is shaped by two main sites: the smaller one in Kokubunji and the larger one in Musashimurayama, where students walk between classes across lawns and through rows of trees. Students use the libraries and common rooms not only for study but also for group projects and daily meetings after classes.
Visitors can reach the main site in Kokubunji using the Chuo Line, from where the campus is accessible on foot or by bus. The university expects international applicants to have knowledge of Japanese and in many programs also basic proficiency in English.
The institution maintains exchange programs with partners in Asia, Australia, and North America, including Pace University in New York and Foreign Trade University in Vietnam. These collaborations allow students to spend a semester abroad and gain international perspectives on economics and law.
