Showa Women's University, Private university for women in Setagaya, Japan
Showa Women's University is a private institution for women in Setagaya ward, Tokyo. The grounds include dormitories, libraries and seminar halls arranged around central lawns and well-kept pathways.
Enkichi and Midori Hitomi established the school in 1920 under a different name. After wartime damage it moved to Setagaya in 1945 and later gained university status.
The campus name reflects the Shōwa era when the school took its present shape. Many programs emphasize exchange between Japan and North America and involve foreign lecturers in everyday teaching.
The grounds are not open to the public, but visitors can glimpse the courtyards from sidewalks along the perimeter walls. Students and staff use several gates with electronic access control.
The same grounds also host Temple University Japan Campus, an American institution from Philadelphia. This arrangement creates a neighborhood where two different academic systems exist just steps apart.
