Nagahama, Historical city on Lake Biwa, Japan
Nagahama stretches across 680 square kilometers on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa, bordered by the Ibuki and Nosaka mountain ranges.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi established his administrative capital here in 1579, changing the name from Imahama to Nagahama and constructing a castle.
The Hikiyama Festival in April features children performing traditional Kabuki theater on decorated floats through the streets of Nagahama.
The city connects to major urban centers through railway services, with the oldest preserved train station building in Japan from 1882.
Nagahama maintains the tradition of producing Buddhist altars known as Butsudan, combining woodworking techniques with decorative metalwork and lacquer.
