Shimo-Kitazawa Station, Interchange railway station in Kitazawa, Tokyo, Japan
Shimo-Kitazawa Station is an interchange facility with underground platforms for the Odakyu Odawara Line and elevated tracks for the Keio Inokashira Line in Setagaya ward. The two lines provide direct connections to Shinjuku and Shibuya, with the Keio service extending west to Kichijoji.
The station opened in April 1927 with the Odakyu section and expanded in 1933 when Keio Corporation added its Inokashira Line service. This created an important transport junction where two major railway networks meet.
The station serves the Shimokitazawa district, where vintage clothing shops, independent music clubs, and small theaters shape the local character. These venues and retailers define how residents and visitors experience the neighborhood daily.
The station has two separate levels with distinct platforms for each line, so travelers should check signage before boarding to find the correct exit for their destination. The layout can be confusing at first, but clear markings help guide passengers through the facility.
A 2018 reconstruction moved the Odakyu tracks underground and significantly improved passenger flow through the facility. This renovation transformed the station into one of Tokyo's most efficiently designed interchange points.
