Tohoku University, National university in Sendai, Japan.
Tōhoku University is a national institution of higher education in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with four main campus areas spread throughout the city. The Katahira site lies near the city center, while Kawauchi and Aobayama sit west of downtown and Seiryo is located farther north.
The institution was established in 1907 as the third imperial university in Japan, opening doors for higher learning in the northeastern region of the country. Six years later it admitted female students, marking a turning point for gender equality in Japanese education.
The campus draws scholars and doctoral candidates from all continents who work in research groups and enrich academic life with international perspectives. Many visiting lecturers from abroad teach classes in English, making the internationality of the institution visible in daily routines.
Visitors can enter the public areas of the campus and walk through pathways between faculty buildings, though they should remain mindful of ongoing classes. Some laboratories and research facilities are accessible only to registered guests.
The Research Institute of Electrical Communication on the grounds carries out studies in materials science and develops new applications in electrical engineering. Many of these projects maintain direct links to regional industry and bring together graduates with companies from the surrounding area.
