Aira district

The district spans across central Kagoshima Prefecture with one remaining municipality, Yūsui, covering a territory of numerous forests and agricultural lands.

Established on February 17, 1879, Aira District expanded in 1897 by merging with Nishisoo and Kuwahara Districts, incorporating eighteen villages under its administration.

The district administration maintains traditional Japanese governmental structures while adapting to modern municipal management systems within Kagoshima Prefecture.

The district currently manages a population of 11,420 residents through its central administrative offices, coordinating public services and local development initiatives.

Four major rivers flow through the district territory, creating the Aira Plain, which supports extensive agricultural activities and shapes the local geography.
