Doshisha University, Private university in central Kyoto, Japan.
Doshisha University is a private institution in central Kyoto that spreads its faculties across several locations. The main campus sits near historical neighborhoods, while another site farther south in Kyotanabe houses science and engineering departments.
Joseph Hardy Neesima founded the school in 1875 as one of the first institutions in Japan to adopt a Western curriculum. The school grew into a full university during the 20th century, adding faculties and campuses over time.
The name derives from "doshisha," meaning "together" or "company" in an early educational context. Visitors can see the historic buildings on the Imadegawa campus, where students move between Japanese and Western architecture.
The main campus lies in northern central Kyoto and is within walking distance of several subway stations. The Kyotanabe campus sits farther south and requires a train ride of about 45 minutes from Kyoto Station.
The campus chapel and several administrative buildings hold official status as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. These structures combine late 19th-century Western building techniques with local materials and have been fully restored.
