Reihoku, town in Amakusa district, Kumamoto prefecture, Japan

Reihoku is a small town on the northwestern tip of the largest Amakusa Island in Kumamoto Prefecture. It sits between green hills and the Amakusa Sea with views of the Chijiwa Gulf, with portions of the area protected as a national park.

The town traces its roots to Higo Province where the Shiki clan ruled from medieval times through the Edo period. During the 20th century, the area developed through clay mining and coal extraction that supported porcelain production, but was later defined by a large thermal power plant built in the 1990s.

The name Reihoku reflects the geography and connection to the sea that shapes daily life here. Visitors notice local flowers like camellias and crinum blooming throughout the town, which serve as symbols of the community and add natural color to the surroundings.

The town is easy to walk around with sidewalks along main roads, though public transportation is limited. Visitors should rent a car or bike to explore widely and plan to visit in spring or autumn when the weather is most comfortable.

The town has remained economically independent because the large thermal power plant built in the 1990s generated enough revenue to avoid merging with nearby cities. A tragic event was a 1954 mine accident when a shaft beneath the sea flooded, causing significant losses.
