New Tanegashima Airport, airport
New Tanegashima Airport is a small facility on the southern island of Tanegashima in Japan that serves regional flights and private aircraft. The airport has an asphalt runway about 2,000 meters long and a simple terminal building with basic services including luggage handling and customs for international arrivals.
An original airport opened in 1962 about 5 miles away but was too short for jet aircraft. In 2006 the old site closed and this new airport opened with a larger runway, allowing bigger planes to serve the island.
The airport's name reflects its connection to Tanegashima island and the space program that defines much of local activity. You can see how air travel shapes daily routines here, with many visitors working on or supporting space missions.
Arrive early to move through check-in and security without rush, as procedures are straightforward here. Buses and taxis are the main transport options from the nearby town of Nakatane, so plan your ride ahead of time.
The airport is operated by the government and serves both civilian and military flights, making it a strategic hub for the region. This dual-purpose role often surprises visitors and contributes to its efficient and secure operations.
