Port of Misaki, port japonais spécialisé dans la pêche au thon
Port of Misaki is a fishing port at the southwestern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture. The harbor handles a large volume of tuna and other fish, with boats coming and going throughout the day and workers unloading catches along the docks.
The port was established in 1922 and over the following decades grew into one of Japan's leading tuna fishing hubs. Fishing crews from across the country began using it as a base for long-distance voyages into the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The port is closely tied to tuna fishing, and the surrounding area has many small restaurants where fresh tuna is served in various forms. Walking through the harbor, you can watch fishermen at work and vendors preparing the catch for local buyers.
Early morning is the best time to visit, when boats return from sea and the dockside activity is at its peak. The harbor is easy to reach on foot from the nearest bus stops in Miura town.
The fish auction here works differently from most Japanese markets: buyers and sellers write their bids on paper rather than calling them out loud. This written bidding method is said to encourage longer-term trust between trading partners over time.
