Nihon-ji, Buddhist temple in Kyonan, Japan
A giant stone Buddha statue, carved directly into the mountainside, stands within the temple grounds alongside 1,553 stone statues of Buddhist disciples.
Nihon-ji Temple was established on July 21, 725, by Buddhist monk Gyoki following an imperial decree from Emperor Shomu of Japan.
The temple houses a sacred Bodhi tree, planted in 1989 as a gift from India, representing the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.
The temple grounds span across five distinct areas on Mount Nokogiri, requiring visitors to climb numerous stairs while wearing appropriate footwear.
The temple features a viewing point called Jigoku Nozoki, offering a straight vertical view down the cliff face of Mount Nokogiri.
