Nihon-ji

Nihon-ji, Buddhist temple in Kyonan, Japan

Nihon-ji is a Buddhist temple on Mount Nokogiri whose most striking feature is a giant stone Buddha statue carved directly into the mountainside. The temple grounds hold roughly 1,553 stone figures of Buddhist disciples scattered across several areas of the mountain.

The temple was founded in 725 by the Buddhist monk Gyoki, who established it under imperial order to create a religious center. Over the centuries, the site expanded and developed into a pilgrimage destination that grew in importance within the region.

The temple draws visitors from across Japan who come to offer prayers before the stone figures of Buddhist disciples scattered throughout the grounds. These statues shape how people experience the space and connect it to practices of devotion and remembrance.

Visiting all areas of the temple requires climbing many stairs, so wearing appropriate footwear is important for comfort and safety. Plan enough time to explore the different sections at a relaxed pace without rushing through.

A viewing point called Jigoku Nozoki offers a straight vertical view down the cliff face of Mount Nokogiri. From this spot, visitors can gaze directly downward and experience a perspective that few other places provide, making the visit memorable.
