Kitakatsuragi district, Administrative district in Nara Prefecture, Japan
Kitakatsuragi district is an administrative area in Nara Prefecture comprising four towns: Kanmaki, Oji, Koryo, and Kawai. The region spreads across varied terrain with different landscapes and elevations throughout its area.
The district was formed in 1897 when the Katsuge and Hirose districts merged as part of a major administrative reform in Nara Prefecture. This reorganization shaped the region's structure and boundaries that persist to the present day.
The towns here host local festivals throughout the year where residents gather to celebrate traditional Japanese customs that shape community identity.
The district brings together several smaller towns with distinct characteristics, so exploring requires time to visit each location meaningfully. Visitors planning to see the area should use local transportation and research what each town offers before arriving.
In 2004, the area underwent a significant change when the towns of Shinjo and Taima merged to become the independent city of Katsuragi and separated from the district. This separation reshaped the administrative structure and marked an important shift in the region's boundaries.
