Wakabayashi-ku, Administrative ward in Sendai, Japan
Wakabayashi-ku covers 50.86 square kilometers along Sendai Bay, with the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Natori River marking its southern boundary.
The area contains numerous kofun burial mounds from ancient periods and was inhabited by the Emishi people before coming under imperial control from Tagajō.
The Mutsu Kokubun-ji provincial temple, established during the Heian period, represents the religious and administrative presence in the region.
The ward maintains 12 public elementary schools, six public junior high schools, and two public high schools, serving its population of over 138,000 residents.
The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake affected the Arahama district severely, where 2,700 houses were destroyed by the subsequent tsunamis.
