Shiroishi Castle, Japanese castle in Shiroishi, Japan
The castle stands on a 76-meter-high hill at the northern end of an isolated ridge in the Shiroishi Basin, between the Ou Mountains and Abukuma Highlands.
Built in 1591, Shiroishi Castle served as a branch fortification of Sendai Castle, maintained by the Katakura clan as vassals of the Date family until the Meiji period.
The three-story wooden tower and gates were reconstructed in 1995, following historical specifications to represent traditional Japanese castle architecture of the Edo period.
The castle opens from 9:00 to 17:00 between April and October, and from 9:00 to 16:00 from November to March, with admission fees of 400 yen for adults.
The castle holds a collection of 66 different types of special castle stamps, which visitors collect as commemorative items during their visits.
