Shimane University, National university in Matsue, Japan
Shimane University is a national higher education institution with two locations in the cities of Matsue and Izumo, offering degree programs in law, literature, education, medicine, science, and engineering. It spreads its facilities across both urban areas and includes several faculty buildings, a medical school, research centers, and student housing.
The origins go back to a teacher training college founded in 1876, which was restructured several times over the following decades. After World War II, it received national university status in 1949 as part of educational reforms.
The campuses blend into the landscape of Matsue and Izumo, where lecture halls, laboratories, and libraries sit among green spaces. Students move between buildings that span different faculties and are used by local and international learners alike.
The main campus in Matsue sits about 2 kilometers from the train station, reachable by public transport in a short time. Visitors arriving from other regions reach the area via airports and rail connections that serve Shimane Prefecture.
This institution was the first public university in Japan to create an interdisciplinary department that combines natural sciences with engineering. Such faculties became common at other Japanese universities later on.
