Tokmok

Tokmok is a city in the Chuy Valley of northern Kyrgyzstan, with the Chu River forming its border to Kazakhstan in the north. It has grown into a center of industrial activity, particularly in glass production.

The settlement was established in 1830 as a military outpost of the Khanate of Kokand, before coming under Russian control in 1864. This period marked the foundation of the city as it exists today.

The city is home to communities of Kyrgyz, Russian, Dungan, and Uzbek people who share the streets and neighborhoods. This mix of groups shapes how the place feels when you walk through it every day.

The city is best explored by car or taxi since the streets do not always follow a clear grid pattern. Most services and shops are concentrated near the center, making it easier to get your bearings.

The Burana Tower, a medieval monument from the 11th century, stands about 15 kilometers south of the city. These ruins mark the location of the ancient city of Balasagun that existed long before the modern settlement.
