Bridge of No Return, International road bridge at Korean Demilitarized Zone, North Korea-South Korea border
The Bridge of No Return spans across the Military Demarcation Line within the Joint Security Area, connecting North Korea and South Korea.
During Operation Big Switch in 1953, the bridge facilitated the exchange of 70,183 North Korean and Chinese prisoners for 12,773 United Nations Command personnel.
The bridge name reflects the finite choice given to prisoners of war, who could not return to their previous side once they crossed the structure.
The structure remains closed since 1976, following the incident where North Korean soldiers killed two United States Army officers near the bridge.
Military ceremonies for United States Army promotions and reenlistments take place at the center point of this bridge between the two nations.
