Yeonsangunmyo, Royal burial plot in Dobong District, South Korea
Yeonsangunmyo is a royal burial site in Dobong featuring stone statues, ceremonial gates, and ritual pathways that lead to the king's resting place. The layout displays typical Joseon tomb architecture with carefully arranged stonework throughout.
The site was built in 1506 and holds the remains of King Yeonsangun, the tenth Joseon Dynasty ruler who reigned from 1494 to 1506. Following his removal from power, his remains were placed here after his death.
The layout reflects Confucian beliefs through its careful spatial arrangement, where traditional stone elements and ritual pathways express spiritual hierarchy. Visitors experience this ordered structure immediately upon entering the site.
The burial site is accessible by public transportation from central Seoul through metro lines serving Dobong District. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven pathways and stairs connecting different areas of the grounds.
This is the only burial site of a Joseon Dynasty king who was formally deposed from the throne due to his controversial rule. This rare distinction makes it a singular example of royal mourning following a king's removal from power.
