Kyzyl Kum

Kyzyl Kum, Desert between Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers in Central Asia

The Kyzyl Kum is a sand desert stretching between two major rivers in Central Asia, interrupted by scattered mountain ranges. The landscape consists mostly of open sand plains with scattered elevations, appearing as an ever-shifting mosaic of dunes and flat areas.

The region served as a crossroads for ancient trade routes linking east and west during antiquity. This central location shaped the development of surrounding city-states and trade networks across many centuries.

The people who live here practice traditional herding, moving their animals across the open sands throughout the seasons. You can see camels, sheep, and horses adapted to survive in this harsh landscape.

The terrain is extremely dry and requires careful preparation for any visit, particularly water supplies and protection from intense sun. The best times to explore are the cooler months when conditions are less demanding.

Beneath the sand plains lie fossils from the Cretaceous period, including remains of very early birds and various dinosaur species. These paleontological discoveries reveal a distant geological past that scientists continue to study today.
