Koksaray Reservoir, Stausee in Kasachstan
Koksaray Reservoir is a large water storage facility in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan, designed primarily for irrigation and controlling water flow from the Syrdarya River. The reservoir covers approximately 50 square kilometers and holds about 4 billion liters of water behind an earthen dam.
Construction of the Koksaray Reservoir began in 2008 following a major flood in southern Kazakhstan and was completed in 2011, establishing a critical component of the region's water management system. The project improved irrigation infrastructure, stabilized agricultural production, and provided flood protection during spring snowmelt.
The reservoir is located roughly 120 kilometers west of Shymkent and is accessible by roads leading to the dam and shoreline. Visiting is easiest during drier months when water levels are stable, though the surface may freeze over in winter.
The reservoir serves as an important stopover for migratory birds such as ibises and pelicans that arrive seasonally, making it a valuable spot for birdwatching. This biodiversity demonstrates how water infrastructure projects can support habitats for traveling species.
