Sugathadasa Stadium, Multi-purpose sports complex in Colombo, Sri Lanka
Sugathadasa Stadium is a multi-purpose sports complex in Colombo with a main arena seating around 25,000 people. The facility includes fields and indoor arenas for football, rugby, athletics, badminton, basketball, and other sports, along with an on-site hotel, training grounds, and locker rooms.
The complex was established starting in 1957 and completed in 1962, named after V.A. Sugathadasa who donated the land for this sports facility. This foundation has made it a major venue for Sri Lankan athletics and competitions for decades.
The venue serves as a central hub where athletes and fans gather for various sports disciplines including badminton, basketball, netball, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, boxing, and gymnastics. It functions as a focal point for the local sports community and hosts both amateur and professional events throughout the year.
The facility has clear signage and multiple entrances to different sports areas, making navigation straightforward for visitors. It is advisable to check ahead for event schedules, as not all areas may be open to the public at all times.
In 2018, a new Rekortan running track meeting international standards was installed, allowing local athletes to train at world-class levels. This modernization reinforced the venue's standing as a serious training center for competitive sport.
